Valuing yourself. Two words forming a complete sentence that holds an enormity of power ― power that can lay the groundwork for a better, more confident you. By the end of this chapter, I hope you will realize what a truly magnificent woman you really are.
Your beauty is magnified by your mindset. When you feel it, you become it. But beauty is more than just about the façade. In fact, let’s remove the physical aspect from the equation altogether. When you begin to appreciate the woman that you are and show yourself love, you become a woman transformed. Your inner beauty will undoubtedly emanate to the outer you.
The Comparison Game empowered woman
Many of us at one time or another have felt inferior to someone else, especially towards other women. To believe we are inferior is to believe that we are somehow ‘less than’ ― less of a woman, less of an intellectual, less of a beauty. As these poisonous thoughts creep into our psyche, we begin to compare ourselves to those around us who we feel stand above that invisible gilded line of demarcation. Ladies, I want you to know you are not defined by how you measure up in comparison to others. Be your own woman, embrace your inner beauty, be incomparable and live in your uniqueness. empowered woman
Consider this scenario: While strolling the aisles in your local farmers market, you happen upon a poised, well-dressed, slender, attractive woman. She exudes confidence with every step and flip of her carefully coifed tresses. She is the kind of beauty you see splashed across a 50-foot movie theater screen or gracing the pages of a high fashion magazine. You wonder to yourself what life is like living in her toned and glistening skin. Will she go home to an equally gorgeous man who greets her with a passionate kiss? Is her life free from stress and worry? Does she bask in the glow of her perceived perfection? As one of the ‘beautiful people,’ do things always seem to go her way? Although you don’t say it aloud, you can’t help but wonder what it would be like to look at life through her eyes, to live in her shoes, to breathe her air, to be her. With each thought, you silently compare yourself to her. By the time you leave the market, you’ve forgotten half of the grocery items on your list, your left temple is throbbing and you’ve convinced yourself that you are woefully inadequate. Why submit yourself to this?
Don’t hold up a pearl encrusted mirror to someone else and expect to see yourself reflected back. As you look for the good qualities in others ― the way they dress, their physical appearance, the house they live in ― you will only find fault in yourself.
When you gauge your gifts, your accomplishments, your looks or anything else against those of another, your life will continue to be out of balance. Imagine your best friend asks you to close your eyes and hold out your hands, palm side up. In one hand she places a seedless grape and in the other a hardcover copy of War and Peace. The weight, the texture, the overall feel ― it’s apparent to you that they are two different objects. The difference is so profound that War and Peace begins to weigh your hand down, making it uncomfortable to hold. What do you do? Do you let it go and allow it to fall to the ground? Do you struggle to hold onto it, knowing that it’s far too heavy for you to carry? This is symbolic of a life out of balance.
As far as the women you’re comparing yourself to, they too may be comparing themselves to other women. It’s an unbroken circle of false inadequacies. You know that saying about the grass being greener on the other side? Well, someone else’s grass will always be prettier, thicker, lusher, greener, more fertile or glisten with morning dew better than yours. Forget about comparing yourself to others and focus on the wonders of you.
